Welcome to the 2013 Chan Contemporary Art Space Exhibition Program

From June until November 2013, an exciting range of exhibitions and events will showcase the diversity of contemporary arts practise from across the Territory.

Audiences will experience exhibitions that offer a variety of contemporary visual art mediums including digital art, photography, painting and installations presented by Darwin Community Arts, Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts & Culture Centre, visual arts students from Charles Darwin University, Artback NT: Arts Development and Touring, the Northern Centre for Contemporary Art and the Toga Group with the prestigious 2013 Togart Contemporary Art Award.

The Chan Contemporary Art Space exhibition program will also include artist talks, workshops and performances, which offer audiences and artists more insight into the Territory’s creative arts practice and opportunities to participate and learn new skills.

In 2013, the Chan Contemporary Art Space is managed by the Northern Centre for Contemporary Art on behalf of the Northern Territory Government.

The Northern Territory Government launched the Chan Contemporary Art Space on 2 September 2010, with the opening of the prestigious 2010 Togart Contemporary Art Award. The Chan offers exhibition opportunities for artists and arts workers, raises the national profile of contemporary arts practice in the Territory and provides audiences with quality and diverse experiences of contemporary arts and craft.
Since opening in 2010, the Chan Contemporary Art Space has:

  • attracted over 19 000 visitors to experience the works of 416 artists, predominantly Territory contemporary artists;
  • offered opportunities to 36 emerging and established curators to develop and present 18 diverse Northern Territory focused contemporary  visual arts and craft exhibitions; and
  • involved 37 arts, community and educational organisations and 81 public program opportunities such as workshops, artists talks and presentations as part of their exhibitions.

Where to find the Chan Contemporary Art Space

The Chan Contemporary Art Space is located at State Square in Darwin’s city, opposite Parliament House. Opening times are Tue- Fri: 10am – 4pm; weekends: 10am – 3pm.
